One minute on a clock is always one minute. Yet we do not always experience it in the same way. When we are waiting for something, feeling bored or constantly checking the time, a few minutes can feel painfully slow. But when we are absorbed in a conversation, an activity or something we enjoy, we may suddenly realise that hours have passed. Time itself is not actually changing speed. What changes is the way our brain experiences it. Time perception is influenced by attention, emotions, arousal, motivation and memory. Why does time feel slower when we are waiting? When we are waiting for something, our attention can become focused on the passage of time itself. A minute spent waiting can feel much longer than a minute spent doing something engaging. The more closely we monitor the clock, the more aware we may become of each passing moment. Attention is one of the important factors that can influence our perception of duration. That is why the familiar feeling that “watching the clock m...

Something drops on the floor. A door suddenly slams. Someone honks unexpectedly beside us. Before we have time to work out what happened, we may blink, flinch or feel our whole body jump for a moment. This is the startle response — a rapid, involuntary reaction to an unexpected and intense stimulus. Why do we jump when we hear a loud sound? The brain does not need to wait for a conscious decision before reacting. Auditory information can activate neural circuits involved in the startle response extremely quickly. The reaction commonly includes an eye blink and brief contractions of muscles in different parts of the body. In other words, the body can begin reacting before we have fully worked out what we have heard. What happens to our heart and breathing? The response is not limited to the muscles. The startle reflex can be accompanied by temporary changes in heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. In an experimental study in humans, a sudden loud sound produced a short-lived increas...

For some people, the sound of rain is simply part of autumn. For others, it is one of the easiest ways to create a sense of calm. There is a reason natural sounds such as rain, flowing water and wind are often used in relaxation settings and environments designed to reduce unwanted stimulation. But what actually happens when we listen to them? Research suggests that natural sounds may influence certain aspects of the body's stress response, although this does not mean that rain has a therapeutic effect or that everyone responds to it in the same way. The brain is constantly processing sound Even when we are simply listening to rain, the brain is analyzing rhythm, volume and changes in the sound. At the same time, it is evaluating whether the surrounding soundscape feels familiar, pleasant or potentially threatening. A relatively steady and predictable natural sound may demand less attention than a sudden or unpredictable noise. This is one reason natural sounds are being studied as...

Our nails do not always behave the same way. They may look strong and smooth for a while and then suddenly start peeling, splitting or breaking more easily. In many cases, this does not mean that something serious is wrong. Nail brittleness is common and can be linked to everyday wear and tear, repeated exposure to water, products we use on our hands or minor trauma. There are also situations in which brittle nails can be a sign of an underlying condition. That is why it is useful to understand what can make nails more fragile and which changes are worth paying attention to. What does it mean to have brittle nails? Brittle nails may split, peel or break at the edges. Fine ridges or separation of the superficial layers of the nail can also occur. Nail brittleness can result from factors that affect either how the nail is formed or the nail plate after it has already formed. Research has identified factors such as dehydration of the nail plate, repeated exposure to water and chemicals, t...

It doesn't take anything extraordinary to make us feel better after spending time with someone we love. Sometimes it's simply a coffee, a walk or a conversation that makes us laugh. Science increasingly recognizes social connection as an important part of health. This doesn't mean that a hug or a pleasant conversation works like a treatment. It means that stable, supportive relationships are part of the environment in which we manage stress and take care of ourselves. Our health doesn't exist separately from our relationships Humans are social beings. Our relationships can influence how we experience everyday life, particularly when we are dealing with stress or difficult situations. Being around people we trust can give us a sense that we have someone to turn to, someone who listens and someone with whom we can share difficulties. This sense of support is an important part of social connection. What about stress? Supportive relationships may help us manage stress more ...

There are days when we talk from morning until night and others when we barely say a word for hours. Silence itself is not something to worry about. It can simply be a natural part of resting, concentrating or enjoying some quiet time. What is interesting is what happens when silence becomes part of our daily routine. Our voice, breathing, attention and social interaction are connected, but not always in the way we might expect. Our voice gets a break Speaking is a physical process. Producing sound involves the vocal folds, the respiratory system and the muscles involved in speech. When we stop speaking, this activity decreases. Vocal rest is sometimes recommended in specific situations involving voice problems or after certain medical procedures. However, complete silence is not necessarily better in every situation. The right approach depends on the individual and the reason for the voice problem. Research involving professional voice users, such as teachers, suggests that balancing ...

Some songs can change our mood within seconds. They may help us feel calmer, bring back a vivid memory, or simply make a familiar moment feel different. That response is not purely psychological. Music can engage brain systems involved in reward, emotion, attention and memory. Music is more than sound When we listen to music, the brain is doing more than processing individual sounds. It recognizes rhythms, melodies and patterns, while connecting them with previous experiences and expectations. When we hear music we enjoy, areas involved in the brain's reward system become active. These include parts of the striatum, which are involved in pleasure and motivation. Research has also linked pleasurable music with dopamine release, a neurotransmitter involved in reward processing. Why can a song change our mood? Music can influence how we experience emotion, but the response is highly individual. Musical preferences, memories associated with a particular song and our emotional state at ...

Sometimes we do not even need to see food. The smell of freshly baked bread, coffee or a meal cooking in the kitchen can suddenly make us think that we are hungry. There is a reason for this. Smell is an important part of how we experience food and can influence appetite, food preferences and the expectation that we are about to eat. However, its effect on how much we actually consume is more complex. The smell of food sends signals to the brain When we smell food, the brain is not simply deciding whether the smell is pleasant. The scent can act as a sensory signal that tells us food is nearby or available. Smell is closely connected with areas of the brain involved in perception, memory, reward and eating behaviour. This is one reason why a familiar food smell can remind us of a particular meal or experience and make us want that food more strongly. Appetite can change before the first bite Research suggests that exposure to food smells can increase subjective appetite, particularly f...

Sometimes, all it takes is one awkward moment for our face to suddenly feel warm. Our cheeks turn red, our heart may beat a little faster and, for a few seconds, it can feel as though everyone's attention is on us. Blushing from embarrassment is a real physical response. It is not simply the feeling that we are getting warm. It is linked to changes in blood flow in the face and to the activity of the autonomic nervous system. Why do our cheeks turn red? When we feel embarrassed or suddenly become aware that we are being watched, the autonomic nervous system becomes involved. In the face, this can be accompanied by vasodilation, meaning that blood vessels widen. This can increase blood flow close to the surface of the skin, making the face appear redder. The reaction is particularly noticeable around the face, neck and ears. Social embarrassment is one of the situations that can trigger this response. Not everyone reacts in the same way How visibly someone blushes varies considerabl...

Some days, we look in the mirror and notice that our eyes seem heavier than usual, even when we do not feel particularly different. Puffy eyelids, more visible dark circles or red-looking eyes can all make the face appear tired. Sleep is one factor that can influence facial appearance. In a laboratory study, faces photographed after sleep deprivation were rated as looking more tired and showed, among other features, more swollen and red eyes and darker under-eye circles. That does not mean that every dark circle or puffy eye is caused by lack of sleep. Dark circles do not have just one cause The skin around the eyes is a particularly complex area. Dark circles can be associated with different factors, including pigmentation, visible blood vessels, thin skin, the anatomy beneath the eyes and shadows created by facial structure. In some people, swelling around the eyes can also contribute to the appearance. This is why two people with similar sleep schedules can have very different-looki...

The change of season affects more than the temperature outside. It also changes the environment our skin is exposed to every day. As the air becomes cooler and, in some settings, drier, our hands can be among the first areas where we notice tightness, roughness or dryness. The skin acts as a protective barrier that helps limit water loss and protects deeper tissues from external factors. Lower temperatures and lower humidity can affect this barrier, making the skin more susceptible to dryness and irritation. What changes as temperatures drop? Environmental humidity affects the amount of water retained in the outermost layer of the skin. Research suggests that changes in temperature and relative humidity can influence skin hydration and barrier function. That does not mean everyone's skin will automatically become dry in autumn. The response varies and can also depend on climate, water exposure, cleansing habits and skincare products. Our hands have another disadvantage: they are wa...

Exercise is not the only form of movement that matters. During an ordinary day, we get up from a chair, walk to the kitchen, take the stairs, carry a bag, tidy the house or simply change position. Many of these movements happen almost automatically, so we do not always think of them as physical activity. Yet they all contribute to how much we move throughout the day. The World Health Organization defines physical activity as any bodily movement that requires energy, including movement during work, transportation, leisure and household tasks. The body moves outside the gym When we hear the words “physical activity”, we may immediately think of running, cycling, sports or a workout. But movement has many forms. Walking to a nearby place, taking the stairs, doing housework or moving around at work can all add activity to the day. WHO specifically includes transportation and everyday household tasks as forms of physical activity. Why do small movements matter? A single short walk or trip u...

Every time we eat, a process begins that continues for hours without us having to think about it. Food travels through different organs, mixes with digestive fluids and is gradually broken down so the body can absorb the nutrients it needs. Digestion is not only about the stomach. From chewing and saliva to the small and large intestines, every stage has a different role. It all starts in the mouth Digestion begins with the first bite. Chewing breaks food into smaller pieces and mixes it with saliva, making it easier to swallow. Saliva also contains enzymes that begin breaking down some carbohydrates while the food is still in the mouth. When we swallow, the tongue moves the food towards the throat and then into the esophagus. The esophagus moves food along Food does not simply travel down the esophagus because of gravity. Muscles in its walls contract in sequence, creating a movement called peristalsis. This pushes the food towards the stomach. Once swallowing begins, much of this pro...

After spending enough time in the bath or swimming pool, our fingers start to look different. The skin on our fingertips becomes covered in small wrinkles. For years, the simple explanation was that the skin was simply absorbing water and swelling. In reality, the process is a little more interesting. What happens to our fingers? Finger wrinkling after being in water is an active process linked to the autonomic nervous system. When our fingers stay underwater, the small blood vessels underneath the skin constrict. This reduces blood flow and volume in the area, causing the skin to pull inward and form the familiar wrinkles. So it is not simply because the skin absorbs water? Not exactly. Water plays a role in starting the process, but the wrinkling itself appears to depend largely on the function of nerves and blood vessels. In fact, fingers with disrupted nerve supply may not develop normal water wrinkles. This is one reason the phenomenon has also been used as a simple test of autono...

When we feel anxious, we may suddenly notice that we are breathing faster, more shallowly or that it feels difficult to take a “normal” breath. Why does this happen? Our breathing is closely connected to the way our body responds to stress and tension. What happens to the body when we feel anxious? When we see a situation as threatening or stressful, the body activates systems that prepare us to deal with it. This response can also affect our breathing. We may start breathing faster or simply become more aware that our breathing has changed. Why can it feel like we are not getting enough air? When breathing changes during intense anxiety, we may experience shortness of breath or feel that we cannot take a deep enough breath. The relationship between anxiety and breathing is complex. Research shows that some anxiety disorders are linked to changes in both breathing and the way we perceive physical sensations. This means that we may pay much more attention to our breathing when we are an...

There are days when, after a long and tiring day, all we want is some quiet time. We may not feel like talking, answering messages or meeting other people. This does not necessarily mean that we do not want the people around us. Sometimes, we simply need some time without social demands. Why can tiredness make us want more quiet time? Social interaction takes energy, especially when our day has already been full of tasks, conversations and decisions. When we are tired, we may want fewer demands and more control over how we spend our time. Research in everyday life suggests that social interaction and solitude can alternate as ways of regulating energy and social needs. Wanting to be alone does not mean we are antisocial Choosing to spend some time alone is different from social isolation. Voluntary solitude can give us a sense of calm, autonomy and a break from social demands. In a daily-life study, spending time alone was linked with lower stress and greater feelings of autonomy when ...

You may start a task with every intention of staying focused, only to find yourself checking your phone, opening another tab or thinking about something completely different a few minutes later. Losing focus does not necessarily mean that we lack discipline. Our attention is affected by our surroundings, interruptions, fatigue and how demanding a task is. What happens when we try to concentrate? Attention is not simply an on-and-off switch. We have to decide what to focus on and what to ignore. When something else takes our attention away, getting back to the original task does not always happen immediately. Research on interruptions and multitasking suggests that the effects of a distraction can continue even after the interruption has stopped. Why are phones and notifications so distracting? A message, notification or sound can grab our attention even when we are trying to ignore it. In a digital environment, constantly switching between apps, messages, emails and different tasks can...
