

A beer on the beach or a drink before an evening swim may seem harmless, particularly to someone who swims well and knows the area. Alcohol, however, affects the abilities needed for safe swimming: judgement, balance, coordination, reaction time and accurate risk assessment.
The sea is not a controlled environment. Currents, waves, sudden changes in depth, rocks and boat traffic can turn a small error into an emergency. Heat and dehydration add further strain even when the amount of alcohol does not seem large.
Alcohol affects more than “clear thinking”
After drinking, the ability to judge distance, effort and personal limits becomes less reliable. A person may swim farther, ignore fatigue or underestimate a current. Reduced balance also increases the risk of falling from rocks, a pier or a boat.
Reaction time slows and coordination becomes less precise. These changes matter even before someone feels drunk.
Strong swimmers are not protected
Swimming experience reduces some risks but does not cancel the effects of alcohol. Overconfidence may encourage longer distances, diving into unfamiliar water or swimming alone.
Drowning often develops quickly and quietly. A person in difficulty may be unable to shout or wave as people do in films. Having friends on the beach is not enough if no one is actively watching the water.
Heat, dehydration and alcohol
Alcohol can increase urine production and make adequate hydration more difficult, particularly with larger amounts. On a hot day, sweating has already increased fluid losses. Headache, dizziness, weakness and nausea may be blamed on alcohol when they are signs of heat strain.
Drinking water between alcoholic beverages may reduce dehydration, but it does not reverse impaired judgement or coordination and does not make swimming safe.
Boats and water sports add further risk
On boats, sailing vessels, canoes, pedal boats and motorised equipment, alcohol increases the risk of falls, collision and operating errors. A life jacket needs to be worn, not merely stored somewhere on board.
Operating a boat after drinking endangers the operator, passengers and swimmers. Anyone supervising children around water should also avoid alcohol because supervision must remain continuous and active.
What is the safer choice?
The safer sequence is to swim first and drink only after all water activities, boat operation and child supervision have ended. Swim with a companion, choose lifeguarded areas when possible and avoid unfamiliar water, night swimming and diving from height.
Do not combine alcohol with sedatives, sleeping tablets, opioids or medicines that cause drowsiness. The combination can intensify sedation and further reduce the ability to respond.
If someone is in danger
Call emergency services and alert a lifeguard immediately. Do not enter dangerous water without training, as this can create a second casualty. Throw a flotation device and follow emergency instructions.
