Participants also consumed more energy and carbohydrates from snacks, although total daily food intake did not differ significantly between the sleep conditions.
That is one reason it is important not to overgeneralize individual studies: the evidence does not produce exactly the same findings in every experiment.
What can you do after a poor night?
There is no need to “punish” yourself for sleeping badly. A more useful approach is to return to your usual routine.
A consistent sleep schedule, enough time for rest and a balanced diet provide a better foundation than trying to compensate for one poor night through excessive food restriction.
The CDC recommends that most adults aged 18–60 get at least seven hours of sleep each night.
