Wildfire smoke is not dangerous only near the flames. It can travel long distances, reduce air quality in cities and islands and affect people who cannot see the fire itself. The main concern is a complex mixture of gases and particles, especially very small PM2.5 particles that can travel deep into the lungs.

Which mask helps?


A well-fitting FFP2 or N95 respirator can reduce inhalation of fine particles when going outside is necessary. Fit is essential: gaps around the nose and cheeks allow air to bypass the filter.

Simple surgical or cloth masks do not provide the same level of PM2.5 protection. Particle respirators do not protect against every gas in smoke and cannot make it safe to remain near a fire. During hot conditions, a respirator adds strain during physical exertion, so limit activity and take breaks in a cool, clean-air space.


Medication and an action plan


People with asthma or COPD should keep their usual medication available and follow the written action plan provided by their clinician. Do not increase doses without guidance or use another person's inhaler. Sufficient medication, a charged phone, water and an evacuation plan should be prepared in advance.

Never delay an official evacuation order to protect property or collect possessions. Immediate danger from fire and hot gases overrides air-quality measures.

Severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain or pressure, confusion, fainting, inability to speak in full sentences or an asthma attack that does not respond to the personal action plan require an immediate emergency call.
