Muscle mass is not just a measure of physical strength or aesthetics. It is a fundamental factor for overall health and quality of life at every age. Muscles support mobility, posture, and metabolism. As we age, the natural loss of muscle mass can lead to reduced strength, increased risk of injuries, and a slower metabolism. However, maintaining muscle does not necessarily require hours at the gym or complex weightlifting routines. In fact, with the right knowledge and strategy, we can support muscle health through simple daily habits, smart nutrition, and effective home or outdoor exercises. Understanding how muscles function and respond to stimuli is crucial. Muscle mass grows or is maintained when muscle fibers are adequately stimulated and provided with the nutrients needed for repair and growth. This means that even without specialized gym equipment, we can engage our bodies in ways that keep muscles active and strong. The challenge lies in applying strategies that are easily inte...

The mind-body connection in health Human health cannot be fully understood without considering the dynamic interaction between mind and body. From early medical traditions to modern scientific research, the human body and psyche were often regarded as separate entities. Today, research demonstrates that this division is artificial: stress, emotions, cognitive patterns, and social experiences directly influence physiology, and vice versa. Psychosomatic reactions are among the clearest manifestations of this interaction, where psychological processes can translate into physical symptoms, impacting both quality of life and clinical outcomes. While the term “psychosomatic” is often used colloquially to describe any physical manifestation of stress or discomfort, modern psychosomatic medicine recognizes complex neurobiological, endocrine, and psychosocial mechanisms at the core of this relationship. Today’s therapeutic approaches shift the focus from merely addressing symptoms to a holistic...

Set the Controls for the Heart of Pompeii

After the holidays, travel changes character. The urgency dissolves, the calendar loosens, and the instinct to accumulate experiences gives way to a quieter desire: to stand somewhere long enough for meaning to surface on its own. It is during this in-between moment, when celebrations have ended but routines have not yet hardened again, that certain places reveal their true depth. Pompeii is one of them. Often approached as a site of catastrophe or a checklist destination near Naples, Pompeii resists simplification when visited in winter. Especially in January, after the noise of the season has faded, the ancient city sheds its role as spectacle and becomes something far more unsettling and honest. It turns into a place where time does not progress, does not heal, and does not explain itself. It simply remains. This suspended quality is what makes Pompeii resonate so strongly after the holidays. When the world urges renewal, momentum, and fresh beginnings, Pompeii offers none of that. ...

After the holidays, many people step on the scale and feel immediate frustration. A few extra kilos appear seemingly overnight, leading to guilt, restrictive diets, and a sense that “damage has been done.” In reality, most post-holiday weight gain is not body fat — and treating it as such often does more harm than good. Understanding what truly happens in the body after periods of richer food, altered routines, and reduced movement is the key to returning to balance without extreme dieting or unnecessary stress. Why post-holiday weight gain is rarely fat True fat gain requires a sustained caloric surplus over time. A few days or even a couple of weeks of festive eating are usually not enough to significantly increase body fat stores. What most people experience instead is: - Increased water retention - Elevated glycogen storage - Temporary digestive bloating - Inflammation linked to salt, alcohol, and disrupted sleep Carbohydrates are stored in the body as glyco...

High blood pressure is one of the most common and underestimated risk factors for cardiovascular disease worldwide. While lifestyle changes and medication are often central to management, many people overlook another important variable: dietary supplements. Supplements are widely perceived as “natural” and therefore harmless. However, scientific evidence shows that certain supplements can raise blood pressure, interfere with antihypertensive medication, or increase cardiovascular strain — sometimes without obvious warning signs. Understanding which supplements may pose risks is essential for anyone managing hypertension, especially given the growing popularity of self-directed supplement use. Why supplements can affect blood pressure Blood pressure regulation is a complex physiological process involving the nervous system, kidneys, blood vessels, and hormonal signaling. Many supplements influence one or more of these systems. Some stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, other...
